Pasta for Dinner

With kids heading back to school next week and the return of hectic schedules I look to easy meals to feed my crew.  Pasta for dinner is a family weeknight meal that makes eating together easier to achieve!  As often as possible we try to eat dinner, sitting around our table, together.  As a mom of 4 growing kids  (teens and pre-teens), I am cooking more than ever – more often and larger amounts – and am busier than ever.   So, recipes need to deliver…appeal to everyone, be easy and quick to make, be nutritious, and of course, be delicious!

I’ve cut back on the amount of pasta I eat, however, I do LOVE it! (Almost as much as shoes!)  So, when I make it it has to be worth it!  I tend to wing it when I cook, so the recipe that follows is my version of:

Orecchiette with Broccoli Rabe and Sweet Italian Sausage: (Makes 6 servings)

1 lb Orecchiette pasta

1 lb Sweet Italian Sausage (remove from casing)

2 bunches broccoli rabe (washed and cut into 1″ pieces)

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

4-5 garlic cloves, chopped

fresh Italian parsley, chopped

————————————————–

1.Bring large pot of water to a boil and salt generously.  Once boiling, add pasta and cook until al dente.  When you drain be sure to reserve some of the salted cooking water to add to pasta at end.

2. Put about 1″ of water at bottom of a large saute pan and place cleaned and chopped broccoli rabe. Cover and cook/steam on medium heat until very tender.

3. In another large saute pan, place sausage removed from casing.  Break it up into small pieces and cook until fat renders and is fully cooked.  Once cooked, remove sausage and set aside.  If there is a lot of fat from sausage pore excess out but do not completely clean pan.

4. In same skillet as sausage was cooked add about 3 TBSP of olive oil to remaining fat and slowly saute the garlic until soft (do not burn).  Once softened, add the cooked sausage back to pan.

5. Once broccoli rabe is tender, drain to remove most of the water. (I use a colander) Once drained put broccoli rabe into pan with sausage and mix together.

6. Add cooked pasta to sausage and broccoli rabe mixture.  Mix together adding a small amount of the reserved cooking water. (I use about 3 large ladles or to desired consistency).  Give a good stir to deglaze bottom of pan.  I add a bit more olive oil as well and I taste.  If needed, I will add some kosher salt.  Add the fresh parsley and mix together.

Suggest serving with fresh Pecorino-Romana cheese (prefer Locatelli brand) and crushed red pepper flakes on side (for those that like some spice and cheese),  a garden salad and sliced, fresh french baquette.

Striped tee with white jeans 3 ways

Shopping my closet,  playing around with pieces in my wardrobe and putting different outfits together is happy time for me.  For Women over 40 the loss of a defined waist starts to become a reality. So using techniques that do not draw attention to the middle, like leaving tops out and choosing jeans that have a high waist, are helpful in camouflaging that area.

Two very basic pieces – a Gap striped relaxed black and white t-shirt and Gap 1969 destructed resolution true-skinny high-rise jeans are combined to create three classic yet different black and white looks.

First is the casual outfit.  I turned up the jeans a bit to create a cuff and mixed the pieces with a black denim jacket, super comfortable Roxy Ventura Crochet slip-on sneakers, my silver Nantucket basket necklace, diamond studs and Chanel sunglasses.

Style a Summer Dress for Fall

Early Fall days in New York, and many parts of the country, begin chilly and end chilly but can get quite warm during mid-day.  While an Indian summer is wonderful, I am itching to start wearing my favorite Fall pieces by the end of September.  Until those leaves start to change color and cool Fall days arrive, style a summer dress for Fall by simply wearing an ankle boot!

When the Fall temperatures finally arrive add a jean jacket or cardigan sweater, layer a long-sleeved t-shirt or turtleneck under the dress, tie a scarf or hanky around your neck and add opaque tights.  Of course, adding a great pair of sunglasses always finishes off a look in any season!

By mixing summer pieces with cool weather pieces and wearing an ankle boot, you stretch your wardrobe, have an outfit that can accommodate the varying temperatures of the day and elevate your style!

Will you style a summer dress for Fall?

Effortless Chic in a Jumpsuit

Wouldn’t it be nice to wake up in the morning, slip into one thing, look totally chic and be comfortable?

Carola Muis

It’s possible with a jumpsuit!  They are great pieces for looking chic and pulled together effortlessly.  Available in a variety of styles and fabrics – the only effort needed is in finding the right one to best flatter your figure.

Paige denim makes the featured jumpsuit. It could be worn with a dressier wedge or heel but the fabric and the design are suited to casual dressing.  Wear a slip-on sneaker and it is a super casual but still chic look.  The cotton fabric is so soft and comfortable it feels like loungewear!

Worn with open-toe stacked booties by Steve Madden and a fringe clutch by Santana found at DSW.

(Tip:  Update your wardrobe with inexpensive, trendy accessories that look high quality.)

By changing up the accessories, makeup and shoes it could work for day or evening. It is available at Madewell stores and at Nordstrom. (click on store names for link to store.)

Classic Sunglasses

Classic sunglasses – the best possible accessory you can invest in!!  Wake up in the morning,  splash water on your face, moisturize, put on some lip gloss , pop on your sunglasses and you are ready to face the world looking good!!

Take the time to find the perfect pair.  You must consider your face shape and where the bridge of the glasses rest on your nose.  And, importantly, high quality lenses protect your eyes from the suns damaging rays.  So, make an investment in a quality pair that provide the dual benefits of eye protection and looking chic!

What is your favorite sunglass shape and brand?

A few of my favorite beauty things!

I have always enjoyed trying out different beauty products, comparing brands and playing with different looks.  There are so many products it can be overwhelming!  I do have a few favorites that I am sharing here.  They perform well — lasting, great texture, multiple and flattering color options and they fulfill their product promise.

If you have good skin (good tone and texture) a tinted moisturizer is a good choice for you. I’ve found the  NARS tinted moisturizer has better coverage than many other brands.  In the evening I will use the Laura Mercier Foundation Primer – Radiance underneath the tinted moisturizer or under a full-coverage foundation.  It provides a wonderfully natural radiant glow! NARS Matte Lip Pencils offer some of the best reds on the market and they stay on and on!! Laura Mercier’s Paint Wash Liquid Lip Color is a newer product that has a smooth feel especially if you prefer a lip gloss and wand application.  Dior Lipsticks are decadent – smooth and creamy and come in a sea of color choices.
